Power is out: what to do first

The first 10 minutes
  • Check whether it is just you: look at your breaker panel, then outside at neighbours.
  • Check your utility's map, and report the outage if it is not listed.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and call 911. Treat every line as live.
  • Keep fridge and freezer doors closed. See food safety.
  • Charge phones from a power bank or car (the car outdoors, never in a closed garage).

Maps are third-party services and are not run by Prep For Outage. Data can lag a few minutes and may not show small or new outages. How to report and track outages (PowerOutage.us).
