What to compare before buying a portable power station in Canada: capacity, output, battery type, cold weather, warranty and shipping.

Key takeaways
  • Size from your own device list, not a brand's headline number.
  • Check cold-weather charging limits and keep the unit indoors in winter.
  • Compare price per watt-hour within the same capacity band.
Honest note: we have not hands-on tested these products. This page shows how to choose and which brands to shortlist. Confirm every spec, price and warranty on the maker's page.
Choose by need
SmallPhones, router, lightsRoughly under 500 Wh. A night or two of essentials. Easy to carry.
MediumEssentials plus part of a fridge dayRoughly 1,000 Wh. Laptops, a blanket, a fridge in short cycles.
LargeMulti-day or home backupRoughly 2,000 Wh and up, often expandable, with solar input.

Battery power station: pros and cons

Pros
  • Silent and safe to use indoors (no exhaust)
  • No fuel to store
  • Instant, simple to operate
Cons
  • Limited energy per charge
  • Cannot heat a home
  • Costs more per hour of backup than fuel

Start with what you need to run

Pick capacity from your own list of devices, not from a brand's headline number. Use our 3-step sizing method or the outage planner. Then compare options in the same size band.

The six specs that matter

SpecWhy it matters
Capacity (Wh)How much energy is stored. Runtime = Wh x 0.85 / watts.
Rated output (W) and surgeMust exceed everything you run at once. Motors briefly draw more at start-up.
Battery chemistryLiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) batteries are often rated for more charge cycles than other lithium types. Check the stated cycle life.
Cold weather limitsMany lithium units restrict or refuse charging below freezing. Check the operating and charging temperature ranges, and keep the unit indoors.
Solar inputInput watts and voltage range decide how fast panels can recharge it in a multi-day outage.
Warranty and supportLook for a stated warranty length and a Canadian support contact or return address.

Canada-specific checks

  • Shipping and duty: confirm the unit ships to Canada, and whether duties or taxes are included at checkout.
  • Canadian store: some makers run a .ca store. Returns and warranty are usually simpler there.
  • Winter charging: in an Alberta or Prairie cold snap, a unit in a cold garage may not charge. Store it inside.
  • Voltage: Canada uses 120 V like the US, so US-spec units generally work. Check the plug and outlet types you need.

A simple buying rule

Buy the smallest unit that covers your essentials for 12 to 24 hours, then add solar panels if you worry about longer outages. A larger unit costs more per outage-hour you will actually use, and weighs more to move.

Quick answers

Are LiFePO4 batteries better?

They are often rated for more charge cycles, which suits a unit that sits for years. Compare the stated cycle life and weight.

How long does a power station last in an outage?

Runtime is usable Wh divided by your watts. 1,000 Wh at 100 W is roughly 8 hours.
